Parent Upset Provincial reopening plan states 50% But the city of Thunder Bay says

Now capacity to 45 people per rink

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~~  September 18, 2021  (LSNews)  As part of the Ontario provincial reopening plan they decided that in stage three arenas would be able to have 50% capacity or 1000 people whichever is less.

Pretty much every community in Ontario has followed the plan except Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay has a crazy General Manager of Community Services that gets paid $185000 who hates hockey.

Last year she cut the ice times of hockey teams that have been held for years because she wanted to give it to other groups such as figure skating. She tried keeping one rink closed to make it appear that ice times were not being used. City council got involved and she was forced to cooperate. Shortly after she had all the hockey nets removed from outdoor rinks to stop the spread of covid, although recreational skating was allowed.

This year they decided that they would mess with rink spectator capacities. Most of our city owned rinks are listed on the city websites as having 700 - 1000 capacity. The city decided that they should be 17 - 43. Simple math says that's slightly less than the provincial mandate. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit said in writing that they were not involved in the decision.

In resonse the city administration claimed they consulted the health unit. People went crazy emailing the Mayor and City Council. They have now increased the capacity to 45 people per rink.

Letter to Kelly Roberton
By Randy Nuefeld

Good afternoon,
By now I'm sure you have all seen the response Kelly Robertson and her staff have come up with for rink capacities.  People have had enough.  Provincial reopening plan states 50%.  They are now randomly using numbers that they think will appease enough people to get away with it.  Why are we using a different formula than every other city in the province.  Any logical person would understand that any of our indoor hockey rinks are large enough to hold more than 45 people, this is a slap in the face to Thunder Bay taxpayers.  The hockey community will not tolerate this.  We need to figure out why the city administration is so against working through a reopening plan that has been accepted by both the province and the hockey organizations.
We need council to step up and get this sorted out!
